Practical Guide to Conducting Fieldwork in Kenya: Lessons from Regional Immersion and Survey Realities.

Highlights Most researchers design surveys with ideal conditions in mind; but the realities of Kenyan fieldwork can make or break the integrity of your data. Recently, I immersed myself across Kenya’s diverse regions to uncover the true operational challenges behind social and market research. From sparse populations at the Coast to household overlaps in Western Kenya, I dissected the myths, examined proven methodologies, and revealed why adaptive protocols—not rigid designs—are the real driver of reliable insights, efficiency, and long-term impact. Inside this article, you’ll discover: • The critical distinction between research design and field realities (and why most studies miss it) • Region-specific budgeting strategies that keep surveys feasible and cost-effective • Practical methodologies to optimize enumerator KPIs and reduce fatigue across diverse terrains • Real-world lessons from extensive immersion that show what works—and what doesn’t—in Kenyan surveys ...

Big Data and Market Research Synergy

Highlights Recently I introduced this topic to my fellow consultants, and it instantly elicited a mixed reaction. I remember issues of bank halls and how retail bankers already apply the concept of customer data to predict needs and customer perceptions or expectations of their services. in this new article, and inspired by perspectives of other researchers, I present how big data can compliment market research. Inferential Statistics: Focus on P Value Part II

Key Highlights Knowing that P value is greatly limited or bounded on the fact that: P value by itself fails to provide a good measure of evidence as regards a hypothesis or a model. P values have the potential to measure the incompatibility of data relative to a statistical model specified. P value fails to measure the probability that the hypothesis under scrutiny is true or the probability that data was a result of pure randomness. The statistical significance of the P value is short of explaining the effect size. Why do we have everyone reporting statistical significance only based on P value, even for such important studies as Biomedical trials? Find out the reason and what to do to report results comprehenssively in the second series of Focus on P value for just $4.

Saving Resources through Sound GBV Screening: A Community Member Observation of GBV Screening by a CDC and PEPFAR Funded Program in Remote Counties of Kenya.

Abstract One of the key indicators monitored by programs implementing the PEPFAR-funded projects is school-based HIV and violence prevention. To prioritize this key performance indicator for the program, a vulnerability assessment is conducted through data collection on variables that build up gender-based violence; physical violence, emotional violence, and sexual violence among the AGYWs enrolled in these programs. Once a target priority is enumerated, GBV screening is conducted by a trained HTS provider. Wouldn’t the fund attain a more targeted and effective use if the vulnerability assessment data at enrollment was consistent with the GBV screening results? It is a postulation of this study that the data to support this claim as maintained by the program will reveal a great disparity and inconsistency because the enrollment data is blatant miss information when screening for GBV and the gap is in the manner of its collection, the point in time it is collected, the consultants tem...

Data Attitude: A Checklist for Effective Data Management

Summary Data is one of the most precious institutional resources of the present century. Unlike any other resources, that is greatly limited, data is available in abundance and for all to utilize, however, my observation and research demonstrate underutilization, and when utilized, it is either by wrong Data Attitude or the most accurate and relevant data captured for reporting is lacking. Even the most basic data such as the qualifications of employees within an economy is seldom utilized. For example, as early as 1987, Tsang, in a study ‘The impact of underutilization of education on productivity’ had opined that overqualification is one of the leading reasons for job dissatisfaction hence (by inference) impacting employee turnover, however, tell me a HR department that reviews qualification progression of its workforce as a strategy towards job satisfaction, yet am sure the same departments conduct job satisfaction surveys quite regularly. Therein lies a classic entry p...

Assessing the Impacts of Mobile Technology in Crop Farming. A Comparative Literature Review of the Effectiveness of Mobile Applications and Related Systems in Enhancing Access to better Market for Smallholder Farmers.

Abstract Most mobile apps and web-based platforms supporting agriculture were introduced, revolutionized, or updated decades ago. The introduction of these platforms has appeared like a revolution, stirring smallholder farming in Kenya and around the world. However, studies examined in this review depict that their benefits to smallholder farmers are an illusion at best. Access to market remains the same both locally and internationally for most farmers, production, and access to farm inputs record little significant improvement, and the monopoly of the middleman remains untamed. Whether there are real benefits to the farmer using the app for their activities, relative to those relying on traditional channels such as word of mouth from professionals, experience about weather trends and farm inputs, internet kiosks, or radio to access information supporting their farming is the focus of this proposed study. The present review depicts that rather than benefits from the apps being ta...

KNIFE CRIME IN ENGLAND AND WALES

Executive Summary The present analysis has been informed by the prevalence of crime related to knife stabbing across most of the London boroughs excluding the city. While crime can emanate from various variables within a society, the UK system is used to offer youth services and funding for such services maintained by the local authorities. Due to reasons that are not clear, such findings have been consistently cut from 2010 to the present. With the cut in children, services have come escalated cases of violent crimes where blades and stabbing weapons have been utilised. The category of weapons with bladed and stabbing edges constitutes a wider spec of knife-related crimes across Britain and Wales. Many news networks have reported different aspect of crime related to knife and postulated that the lack of gainful employment or services that keeps the youth busy and away from crime and their reduction in resources that funded them has been the cause of such violent crimes and hence deat...

Inferential Statistics: Focus on the P Value

Abstract As I sit at my desk, I realize it's hardly a year since my graduation in July 2016. What occupies my mind is the inconsistency with which inferences made from the utilization of P Value as an assessment of statistical significance are skewed towards biases of analysts, sometimes just a result of blatantly confusing principles of model assumption. My quick research reveals that statistics as a field experiences selective interpretation of statitics, and detrimental of them all is the probability related value, P value. This article gives an insight on the correct interpretation of P value, relative to a pre-determined level of significance for a hypothesis test. The overall theme leading to inconsistencies or inacuracies with P value is in the violation of data analysis protocols. Find out in the full text, issues around interpretation of the P value and insights; A large P value favors Null hypotheses! Access the full text via my secure payment link below. ...
